Bhubaneswar: Even though it’s winter, the recurrence of cyclones in Odisha has led to a rise in fungal skin infections. Dermatologists in the state have attributed it to poor personal hygiene.
“We have seen a surge in fungal infections. In coastal belts, cyclone-induced rainfall causes waterlogging. There may be some unhealthy waterlogging in the patient’s property during which personal hygiene is compromised,” said Maitree Panda, professor of dermatology at SUM Hospital.
The skin expert also shared ways to protect the skin and hair during the winter season, keeping in mind the weather conditions in Odisha. Here’s what you need to do for your skin this winter:
Bathing tips
Use lukewarm water for taking a bath. “Before taking a bath, one should leniently apply coconut water. Sometimes, people use mustard or almond oil, which is not skin-friendly. One should avoid such oils and instead use coconut or olive oil,” said Panda.
Choose the right moisturizer
After taking the bath, one should apply skin-friendly moisturizer. It should be dermatologically tested. It is advisable to take the help of a dermatologist. It should be a paraffin-based moisturizer and ree from alcohol or other allergens, which can cause skin irritation. “After the bath, pat your skin dry and then immediately apply the moisturizer. It can be reapplied depending upon the skin type,” she added.
Don’t forget the sunscreen
For sensitive skin, moisturizers must be applied with sunscreen during the daytime. The sun rays are harmful for the skin even during winter.
Syndet soaps are helpful
“Avoid using soap regularly. Pick up syndet soap, prescribed by the doctor,” Panda said.
Eat right, sleep well
For the oral diet, the expert suggested plenty of fluid intakes in the form of fruit juices, shakes and water, besides consumption of fruits. For good skin, sufficient sleep is a must.
Beware of eczema and psoriasis flare-ups!
Due to the climatic change, patients with dry skin issues turn up in large numbers at the OPDs, Panda said. “Many patients suffer from eczema despite the humid weather conditions prevailing in Odisha. Even people with psoriasis experience flare-ups. So, it is advisable to take proper care of the skin,” she added.
