Dibrugarh: Four days after jailed ‘Waris De Punjab’ leader Amritpal Singh won the Lok Sabha election as an Independent candidate from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib constituency, his parents visited him in Dibrugarh Central jail on Saturday.

Conveying Amritpal’s gratitude to voters, his father Tarsem Singh called on the government to drop the charges against him so that he can serve his constituency.

Despite his incarceration since March 2023, Amritpal won the Khadoor Sahib seat by 1.97 lakh votes. While he got 4,04,430 votes, Congress’ Kulbir Singh Zira received 2,07,310 votes and AAP’s Laljit Singh Bhullar 1,94, 836 votes.

“He (Amritpal Singh) asked to thank every voter who supported him… He will work to serve the public… The public has given such a big mandate, the government should withdraw all the cases and allow him to raise the voice of Punjab in Lok Sabha,” Tarsem told newspersons after meeting his son in prison.

There are already talks of whether he will be able to attend the oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected MPs in Lok Sabha.

“It is not in either his or our hands to get him out of here for his oath-taking ceremony. The legal procedures would have to be checked and followed to initiate steps in this direction,” Tarsem remarked.

Amritpal’s parents Tarsem and Balwinder Kaur were received at the airport by his wife Kirandeep Kaur — who has been in Dibrugarh since June 5 – from where they proceeded to Dibrugarh jail.

“We are very happy that our son has won the elections. We have come to meet him so that he will also feel happy that people love him and elected him by such a huge margin,” Tarsem said.

Amritpal’s mother distributed sweets to jail employees to celebrate her son’s election victory, reported PTI. She mentioned bringing a new set of clothes and shoes for Amritpal for his oath-taking ceremony as an MP.

Ten members of the pro-Khalistani outfit ‘Waris De Punjab’, including Amritpal and one of his uncles, have been in Dibrugarh jail since March 19 last year. They were arrested under the National Security Act following a crackdown on ‘Waris de Punjab.’
