Berhampur: A woman member of an Anganwadi centre has allegedly committed suicide for harassment by a private finance company in Ganjam district.
According to sources, the Anganwadi worker, Subhasini Panda of Podapadar village under Chhatrapur police station, had taken a personal loan from the private finance company. But she was unable to repay the loan due to financial constraints.
On May 8, she went out of her house on some work, but did not return till late night. Her family members enquired from their relatives and her friends to know her whereabouts for three days. After failing to trace her despite searching at all possible places, they lodged a missing person case at the police station on Wednesday.
On Friday morning, some people found the body of Subhasini hanging from a tree in the forest near Podapadar. On being informed, police went to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.
Her family members told the police that Subhasini was harassed by officials of the private finance company for not repaying the loan. She was mentally disturbed for the last few days. Unable to bear the harassment, she took the extreme step, they alleged.
