Kendrapada: In a shocking incident, the president of a women self-help group (WSHG) allegedly locked up an 81-year-old woman and thrashed her at Ganja village in Odisha’s Kendrapada district. The 81-year-old woman’s fault? Her daughter-in-law had taken a loan from the SHG but was yet to repay it.
The woman, Saraswati Ray, was rescued by police and is now undergoing treatment at the community health centre in Rajkanika. The incident took place on Thursday evening.
According to TNIE, Saraswati’s daughter-in-law Puja had reportedly borrowed Rs 40,000 from the SHG a few months back. She left for New Delhi recently without repaying the loan.
An angry WSHG president Gayatri Mohala reached Puja’s house on Thursday and, finding that she was not there, asked Saraswati to repay the money. When she said she cannot, Gayatri allegedly locked her up and assaulted her.
The victim’s granddaughter Dipika Ray filed an FIR on Friday.
