Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has issued yellow warning of light to moderate rain/thundershower with lightning for nine districts in Odisha, including twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, till 6.20 pm on Wednesday.
The districts that are likely to be affected are Khurda, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Samabalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, Kandhamal, Boudh and Sonepur. People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.
Notably, heavy rainfall activity will continue in Odisha for five days with the formation of a low pressure area over northwest and adjoining West central Bay of Bengal, which is likely to become more marked in the next 24 hours and move across south Odisha and south Chhattisgarh during the next 3 days.

The weather agency has issued red warning of scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy (>20cm) for Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Boudh, Sonepur and Balangir till 8.30 am on Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Angul and Ganjam. Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is also likely at one or two places in Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Dhenkanal during the day.
It has warned of water-logging in low lying areas, inundation of agriculture field, mudslides or landslides in vulnerable hilly areas. There is also a possibility of some damage to kutcha road and houses and waterlogging at underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility leading to traffic congestion in urban areas. Farmers have been advised to postpone fertiliser/chemicals application in agricultural field, keep livestock in safe place.
There will be a slight decrease in the intensity of rain thereafter.
