Bhubaneswar: A youth was allegedly beaten to death at a de-addiction centre in Airfield Police Station area of the Odisha capital on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Sumanta Panda (36) of Unit-6 area of Bhubaneswar.
As per information, Sumanta was admitted to the rehabilitation centre by his family members on Sunday evening. However, they received information that he had been admitted to the hospital.
Sources said the employees of the de-addiction centre had taken Sumanta to a hospital in the early hours of Monday and asked the medical authorities to inform the family members about his death.
After getting information, the family members of the deceased rushed to the hospital and found no staff of the de-addiction centre at the spot.
Family members of the deceased have further alleged that there were multiple injury marks on Sumanta’s body. They later lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Sumanta was beaten to death by the rehabilitation centre staff.
Acting on the complaint, a police team visited the hospital and initiated the autopsy process. Further investigation into the incident is in progress.
No comments from the police or officials of the de-addiction centre could be obtained.
