Sonepur: A new year celebration turned tragic as a college student died of drowning while the villagers in the district had gone for picnic on Friday.
According to reports, the villagers of Seledi village under Binka police limits had gone on a picnic to the banks of Mahanadi river to celebrate the day. While they were busy preparing for the feast, the youth identified as Anwesh Pradhan of the village along with his friends went to take bath in the river.
While they were bathing, Anwesh slipped into deep water. Despite their best efforts, his friends could not rescue him. They informed the Fire Brigade which rushed to the spot and brought Anwesh out of river.
Anwesh, a student of Gangadhar Meher University in Sambalpur, was rushed to the district headquarters hospital where the doctors declared him dead, sources said.
