According to police sources, a piece of farmland of Jagadev Parida of Lathipada village under Itamati police station was allegedly encroached by Rout family of neighbouring Bhutadihi village. The two families have been engaged in the dispute over the land for some time. The matter was set to be taken up in a meeting of the elders of the two villages on Monday.

On Sunday afternoon, Jagadev was alone in his house while his two sons, Dandapani and Pramod had gone to work in the farmland. At this time, the members of Rout family called Jagadev out of his house and started an argument over the land issue.

As Dandapani and Pramod heard them argument exchanging harsh words in pitch of their voices, they rushed to the village. While the two brothers were trying to pacify them, Rout family attacked Dandapani with a sharp weapon.

Dandapani sustained critical injuries in the neck and fell down in a pool of blood. Rout family members also attacked Pramod and Jagadev while the latter were trying to protect Dandapani and fled.

The villagers rushed all the three injured persons to a local hospital where the doctors declared Dandapani brought dead. Pramod and Jagadev were undergoing treatment in the hospital.

On being informed, a team from Itamati police station went to the hospital and started investigation. They have registered a case and launched a manhunt to trace Rout family members who are absconding.
