1983 Cricket World Cup Winning Player Yashpal Sharma No More

New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer and a member of the 1983 World Cup winning team Yashpal Sharma died of a massive cardiac arrest on Tuesday. He was 66.

Sharma is survived by his wife Renu Sharma, two daughters and a son.

Glittering career

Born in Ludhiana on August 11, 1954, Sharma represented three teams including Punjab, Haryana and Railways in the Ranji tournament. He played 160 matches and scored 8, 933 runs. This included 21 centuries with the highest score of unbeaten 201.

A gifted middle-order batsman, Sharma made his test debut for India against England in 1979. He went on to play 37 Tests for India and scored 1,606 runs with two centuries (top score of 140) and nine fifties to his name.

He made his ODI debut against Pakistan in 1978. He had amassed 883 runs at an average of 28.48 in this format.

Post-retirement

After his cricket career spanning the late 70s and 80s, Sharma was involved in various roles with the BCCI, Punjab and Haryana cricket, and also served as cricket expert with a national media channel.
