Bareilly: A 2kg hair bundle was removed from the stomach of a 31-year-old woman by doctors in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly. The woman had been suffering from a rare disorder causing her to compulsively eat hair for over 15 years, an India Today report stated.
The patient had been experiencing severe stomach pain for a prolonged period. Doctors diagnosed her with tricholotomania, a rare psychological disorder. In this disorder, the patient feels the compulsive urge to eat hair.
The woman had been battling this disorder since 16 years of age. Doctors claimed that the accumulation of hair in her stomach led to blockage and intense discomfort. She had got no relief despite seeking treatment at a private hospital.
In September, she was admitted to Bareilly’s Maharana Pratap District Hospital, a state-run facility. Doctors conducted a series of tests on her. Later, the medical team, led by senior surgeon Dr MP Singh and Dr Anjali Soni, decided to perform surgery.
Following the surgery, the woman was discharged from the hospital. She is currently undergoing psychological counselling.
