Ganjam: Dreaded criminal Babu Nayak was injured in an encounter with police at Gurudapathar under Bhanjanagar police limits in Ganjam district on Thursday.
He was later admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur in a critical condition.
A pistol, live ammunition, crude bombs, detonators and nearly 1 kg gold ornaments were seized from his possession.
According to police sources, a team of Tarasingh police reached Gurudapathar following a tip-off about the criminal’s presence in the area. On releasing that he had been cornered, Nayak opened fire on the policemen, who retaliated. He sustained bullet wounds on his legs and right hand.
More than 40 criminal cases are pending against Nayak at different police stations. He was allegedly involved in the recent robbery at Bhuguda Utkal Gramya Bank in the district, the sources added.
