Bhubaneswar: The deep depression over Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ and is likely to turn into severe cyclone by Sunday morning, said IMD.
In a special bulletin, released at 9.45 pm on Saturday, the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar said the deep depression over east-central Bay of Bengal has moved nearly northward with a speed of 12 kmph during the past 6 hours and intensified into cyclonic storm Remal.
“At 5.30 pm, the storm lay centered over north and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, about 360 km south-southeast of Khepupara in Bangladesh, 350 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands in West Bengal and 390 km south-southeast of Canning in West Bengal,” the IMD said.
“It is very likely to continue to move nearly northwards and intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by May 26 morning over northwest and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal. The system will cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by May 26 midnight as Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed of 110-120 gusting to 135 kmph,” the bulletin stated.
The Met office has issued a yellow warning and said heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is likely under the influence of the system at isolated places in Odisha districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada by 8.30 am on Sunday.
It has also forecast light to moderate rain/thundershower at many places in the districts of coastal Odisha, and at
