Depression Over Bay In 12 Hours, Rain Intensity To Increase In Odisha; IMD Issues Orange Alert

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to experience very heavy rain till August 3 morning under the influence of the well-marked low pressure area over North Bay of Bengal, which is likely to move northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression during next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

The weather agency further said that the western end of the Monsoon Trough is running close to foothills of Himalayas and Eastern end is now passing through Darbhanga, Deoghar, Canning and the centre of the well-marked low pressure area over central parts of North Bay of Bengal and thence southeastwards to eastcentral Bay of Bengal.

The IMD has issued orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain (7 to 20cm) for isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak till 8.30 am on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is also likely at one or two places in Jajpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Koraput.

On August 1, heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been sounded for isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Sundargarh, Cuttack, and Balasore. Yellow warning of heavy rainfall has also been issued for one or two places in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balangir and Nuapada districts.

During the subsequent 24 hours (August 2), heavy to very heavy rain is likely to lash isolated places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Samablpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Kandhamal. Heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balsore, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Nabarangpur.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at most places across the state on these days.

While there is no further orange warning, one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir, Nuapada and Mayurbhanj are likely to experience heavy rain on August 3.

There is no more heavy rain warning for Odisha in the subsequent 3 days. However, light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at many places in North Odisha and at a few places in southern districts of the state on August 4.

Notably, Odisha has so far recoded 483.4 mm seasonal rainfall against its normal value of 550.7 mm since June 1. While 12 districts were deficient, 2 were in excess and  rest 16 districts were in the normal category, the MeT office added.
