Expect 1st Pre-Monsoon Cyclone ‘Remal’ To Trigger Heavy To Very Heavy Rain In Odisha; Check Wind Warning

Bhubaneswar: The anticipated Cyclonic Storm Remal over Bay of Bengal may trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha on May 26-27, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre informed on Thursday.

According to a special bulletin, a well-marked Low Pressure area persists over west central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal. “It is very likely to continue to move northeastwards and concentrate into a Depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal by morning of May 24. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move northeastwards, intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm over east central Bay of Bengal by May 25 morning. Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards and reach near Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by May 26 evening as a Severe Cyclonic Storm.”

If the system develops into a cyclone, it will the first during this pre- monsoon season, and be named Remal, meaning ‘sand’ in Arabic, as suggested by Oman.

While light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely to lash north and south Odisha from May 25 under its influence, yellow warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) has been issued for isolated places in Balasore on May 26. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may also occur at isolated places in Bhadrak and Kendrapada.

On May 27, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely at isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak districts.

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along and off adjoining North Odisha coasts from May 25 evening.

The weather agency has also warned of squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal on May 23. “It would become 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over central Bay of Bengal on May 24 and extend to adjoining areas of North Bay of Bengal with gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from May 25 morning. It would further increase becoming 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph over north Bay of Bengal and 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph over adjoining central Bay of Bengal from May 26 morning for the subsequent 24 hours.”

It has advised fisherman to return to the coast and not to venture into south Bay of Bengal till May 24, central Bay of Bengal till May 26 and North Bay of Bengal from May 24 till the morning of May 27.
