Dhenkanal: A farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant when he was working in the paddy field in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district on Monday.
The incident took place at Mundia Sahi under the jurisdiction of Rasol police station early in the morning when the farmer, identified as Panchu Behera, was working in his agriculture field, sources said.
The jumbo, stated to have strayed into the village from a nearby forest in search of food, attacked the farmer and trampled him to death. His body was recovered and sent for postmortem.
After getting information, officials of the forest department rushed to the site and initiated steps for assisting the family of the deceased.
Irked over the incident, the villagers demanded quick steps by the forest department to drive away elephants from the area as they are frequently intruding into human settlements in search of food.
