Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has seized 69 vehicles, including Mercedes, MG Comet, Thar and Maruti Suzuki Brezza, for drunken driving in Bhubaneswar.

Among these, 11 were seized using spikes for dangerous wrong-side driving under the influence of alcohol under the ‘Safe City Drive’, a police release said on Sunday.

The drive against drunken driving was intensified in the city on Saturday night and the enforcement was carried out in areas under Capital, K V Nagar, Khandagiri, Airfield, Nayapalli, Saheed Nagar, Bharatpur, Badagada, Airport, Infocity, Lingaraj, Nandankana, Mancheswar, Laxmisagar, Maitribihar and Chandrasekharpur police limits, besides Traffic police stations -1 & II.

“The drive was meticulously planned and executed under Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh, targeting over 20 vulnerable points across Bhubaneswar by utilising 8 platoons of force.”

It further said that criminal cases have been filed against nine heavily drunk drivers, who tried to run over the police team driving recklessly on the wrong side, and for obstructing police in discharging their duty.

The violators will have to pay fines in the court. They will be able take back their seized vehicles after obtaining a release order. Police have also recommended suspension of their driving licenses to the Regional Transport Office (RTO), it added.

Twin City Commissioner of Police Sanjeeb Panda has appealed to the public to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol. “Safety of the city denizens is our top priority. We urge everyone to refrain from drunken driving, as it poses
significant danger not only to the violators but also to the public on the road,” he said.
