New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi became a “head turner” by sporting a colourful safa (headgear) at Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day on Sunday.
The PM wore a Kolhapuri Pheta style turban with a long trail that extended till his ankle as he addressed the nation on India’s 75th Independence Day.
He paired the turban with a pastel powder blue half-sleeve kurta, which is now widely popular as Modi kurta, and a stole.
Those who watch the PM’s sartorial styles said it’s a tradition with Modi to wear dashing and colourful headgears while attending Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations.
Here’s a look at the different turbans the PM wore at successive I-Day addresses to the nation from the Red Fort.
2014
In his first Independence Day speech in 2014, Modi wore a red Jodhpuri bandhej turban with a green trail.
2015 & 16
It was a yellow safa in 2015 and a tie and dye turban with a pinkish hue the next year in 2016
2017 & 18
The PM donned a red and yellow turban in 2017. Next year, the colours were saffron and red
2019
Modi chose a predominantly yellow-coloured twisted headgear in 2019. It had a dash of green and red along with a long trail that extended to his ankles
2020
Last year, the PM opted for a predominant mix of orange- and yellow-coloured headgear. Keeping in view the pandemic situation, he added a white scarf like a mask with orange borders
