Sahoo said that the award is a recognition of not just his skill and effort, but that of the art of Odisha sculpture. He urged the young generation not to forget their roots.
The octogenarian, with an age-defying enthusiasm and zest for life, regaled the audience with stories ranging from mythology to travel, environment protection to work ethics.
To every person who greeted him with a bouquet, he gently urged, “Please bring me a sapling next time.”
His daughters Pushpa Sahoo, artist and entrepreneur, and Purnima Sahu, jeweller, hosted lunch on the occasion.
Many women wore handwoven Odisha sarees as a mark of respect to Sahoo and his wife Arnapurna, the ever-gracious, quiet yet powerful force behind the man.
Union Textiles Secretary UP Singh and his wife were part of the celebration.
