Keonjhar: On Thursday, Mohammed Salim got registered as a lawyer with the Odisha Bar Council and is now waiting for her chance to practise at the Barbil court.
By doing so, Salim, who is now Salma Begum, also made history by becoming the state’s first transgender lawyer.
Salma, born in Bhuyanroida of Keonjhar district, decided to come out in the open after meeting a transgender group in 2015. After her graduation, she got a law degree from Pravas Manjari Law College in Keonjhar.
“I decided to study law hoping that one day I will practice at the Barbil court,” she said.
Some years ago, she had applied for the post of sub-inspector of police. The results are still awaited. Then she decided to take up law.
