Cuttack: To prevent the entry of backwater of Mahanadi floodwater into Cuttack city, the district administration on Sunday lowered the Matru Bhawan gates.
Informing this via a tweet, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) commissioner Ananya Das said that as the flow of Mahanadi backwater is 1200 cusecs per second, the mechanized gates near Matru Bhawan Chhak have been lowered to prevent the backwater from entering low-lying areas of the city through the Taladanda Canal.
To facilitate discharge of drain water of the city to Mahanadi and Kathjodi, the Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board (OWSSB) has upgraded the manual gates to mechanized gates at the cost of Rs 1 crore, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
There are 32 gates at Khan Nagar, Matru Bhawan and Matagajpur in the city.
