Nor’wester Rain, Gusty Wind Continue To Lash Odisha; Mercury Soars Past 41°C In Bhubaneswar By 2.30PM

Bhubaneswar: While seering heatwave has gripped parts of Odisha, nor’wester-triggered rain accompanied by thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely in 19 districts till Thursday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Wednesday.

There is also a nowcast warning for light to moderate rain or thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Koraput, Puri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj Bhadrak, Sonepur and Rayagada till around 7 pm.

According to IMD, isolated thunderstorms activity is likely to prevail till May 29 along with hot weather condition in some districts of western Odisha. There is also a warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal and Ganjam on May 27.

The MeT office further said that there will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 5 days and the mercury may soar up to 42°C or more at a few places in interior Odisha – Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Jharsuguda and Bargarh – during next 3 days. “Consequently, hot & discomfort weather very likely to prevail and people are advised to take precautionary while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm,” it added.

On Wednesday, Sambalpur was the hottest at 42.8°C followed by Jharsuguda (42.4), Bhubaneswar (41.2), Chandbali (40.8), Hirakud (40) and Keonjhar (39.4) by 2.30 pm.

According to a forecast, the day temperature is likely to touch 44 degree Celsius in Sambalpur and 43 degree Celsius in Sundargarh by the end of the day. Six places – Jharsuguda, Boudh, Titlagarh, Rourkela, Balangir and Angul – may record 42 degree Celsius.
