Bhubaneswar: BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced the first list of party candidates for nine Lok Sabha and 72 Assembly seats in Odisha.

Among these candidates, only Kausalya Hikaka had contested the 2019 elections and lost to Congress’ Saptagiri Ulaka by a slender margin of 3,613 votes. Dilip Tirkey was the BJD’s candidate for 2014 elections from Sundargarh and he had lost to BJP’s Jual Oram by 18,829 votes. Pradeep Kumar Majhi had won the Lok Sabha from Nabarangpur in 2009 on Congress ticket. He joined the BJD in 2021.
Sudam Marndi, who was the president of the Odisha unit of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), had joined the BJD in 2014.
Manmath Routray, who joined BJD this morning, will be making his electoral debut from Bhubaneswar. He is the son of senior Congress leader and 6-time Jatni MLA Suresh Routray.
The BJD, on the other hand, dropped sitting MP Anubhav Mohanty and nominated Anshuman Mohanty from Kendrapada.
The other new face is Ranjita from Aska. She is the daughter of Hara Prasad Sahu, BJD leader and former chairman of Kodala notified area council. Her mother Sunitaprava Sahu is also former chairperson of Kodala NAC. Ranjita has been active in Kabisuryanagar assembly segment and has been heading Kabisurya Yubak Sangha.
Naveen also announced candidates for 72 Assembly seats and 13 among them are new faces. The BJD has swapped its candidates, who had fought 2019 from Bhadrak and Bhandaripokhari and and also from Brahmagiri and Satyabadi. Kalikesh Singh Deo, who was earlier an MP, has been fielded from an assembly constituency this time.
Naveen is set to re-contest from Hinjili seat for a sixth term.
