Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government, for the first time, is set to hold jail adalats inside the prisons from April. Some states like Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Telanagana currently organise such adalats for inmates.
The objective of organising the jail adalat is for the speedy disposal of court cases, involving petty offences, and quick settlement of the various cases in the under-trial prisoners’ (UTPs) presence.
“We will hold the jail adalats in coordination with the state legal services authority (SLSA) on the premises of prisons across the state. Cases relating to petty offences, which are compoundable in nature and invite a jail-term of only one or two years, would be quickly disposed of by judicial magistrates,” director general of police (prisons and correctional services), Santosh Upadhyay said.
