Malkangiri: A woman constable, Basanti Chodhury (28), came to the rescue of a 22-year-old, who reached the examination centre in Odisha’s Malakangiri district for the written test for the post of constables with a four-month-old baby girl.
Mother of a eight-month-old son, she not only took care of the baby for over 1 hour but also breastfeed her while on duty at Malkangiri College.
According to sources, Chanchala Malik arrived at the centre around 9.20 am on Sunday and was at her wits’ end when her relative did not turn up to take care of the infant, who by then was inconsolable. The exam was scheduled to start at 10 am.
Speaking to the media, Basanti said that being a mother herself, she could not bear to see the woman’s agony and promptly offered to help. “The infant cried since it was not fed for a long time, so I breastfeed her. I took care of the baby girl for over an hour till her family members arrived. The child’s mother looked relaxed and wrote the exam till 12 noon,” she said.
Taking to his official handle on Twitter, Malkangiri SP Nitesh Wadhwani wrote, “A candidate appearing for Constable (civil) recruitment examination today at Malkangiri was overwhelmed when Constable Basanti Chowdhary, deputed at the venue, took care of her infant baby while she was appearing for the exam. Kudos to both”.
South-western range DIG Rajesh Pandit said Basanti would be rewarded for discharging her duty with humanity.
