The mysterious deafening sound was reportred by people in Baripada and Balasore districts in the morning.
People in several parts of the two districts were panic-stricken after they heard the sound. The doors and windows of the houses also vibrated amid the deafening noise, sources said.
However, the cause of the sound is yet to be ascertained. People are in a state of panic while authorities are trying to trace its origin. The vibration lasted a few seconds. People moved out of the house into the open.
The sound, which was heard in the morning hours, triggered speculation about a possible explosion or supersonic boom.
People in Balasore district suspected that the loud sound might have occurred due to some missile test at the Integrated Test Range (ITR).
