Bhubaneswar: In a gruesome incident, a youth allegedly slit the throat of a girl after she turned down his proposal to be his lover and then killed himself in Odisha’s Deogarh district on Saturday.

According to sources, the youth, identified as Simanchal Sasmal of Ganjam district had made friendship with the girl belonging to Deogarh town in Facebook around two years back. They used to chat on the social media platform on various issues including personal matters.

During their chat, Simanchal confessed to the girl that he was in love with her and wanted to have a relationship. Despite his repeated requests, the girl turned down the proposal.

On Saturday afternoon, the girl along with a child was going to a market place in the town in the evening when Simanchal confronted her. They were engaged in argument for some time and then Simanchal brought out a blade and slashed the girl’s throat.

As the girl started bleeding profusely and collapsed on the spot, Simanchal cut his throat with the same blade. The locals, who were witness to the incident, rushed both of them to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in the town.

The doctors in the hospital declared Simanchal brought dead and said the condition of the girl was critical. On being informed, a team from Deogarh police station went to the DHH and sent Simanchal’s body for post-mortem. They have also registered a case and started investigation.
