A day after the Union Cabinet ratified it, President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday approved the ordinance which makes triple talaq a criminal offence.
The Modi government re-promulgated the triple talaq ordinance despite the fact that most of the opposition parties are opposed to it.
The Union Cabinet had on Tuesday given its nod to four ordinances, including the triple talaq ordinance.
While talking to the media, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the government brought these ordinances as they had been pending for a long time and could not be passed by the Rajya Sabha because of disruptions.
The triple talaq bill has lapsed in Rajya Sabha after no consensus with the Opposition was built. The first time the Modi government had brought the triple talaq ordinance was in September 2018.
