Cuttack: A woman gave birth to a baby girl with a rare medical condition at a private nursing home in Odisha’s Kendrapada district on Sunday morning.
The girl born to Umakant Parida and his wife Ambika, residents of Kani village in Rajnagar, has two heads and three hands.
She was initially shifted to the district headquarters hospital and then to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Postgraduate Institute of Paediatrics (Sishu Bhawan), Cuttack, for specialised treatment.
According to sources, the newborn is the couple’s second child. Ambika was admitted to Rajnagar Community Health Centre on Saturday after she complained of labour pain. The doctors there referred her to the district headquarters hospital. The couple, however, instead went to a nearby private hospital for the delivery.
Paediatrician of the district headquarters hospital Dr Debashis Sahoo told a local news channel that the twin sisters are conjoined and share a single body, three arms and two legs. She is eating with two mouths and breathing with two noses, he said.
“The baby, delivered by caesarean section, is physically fit now. She was shifted to Cuttack for specialised treatment,” the doctor added.
The father of the newborn has requested the Odisha government for help towards her treatment.
