In the latest ‘sanction’, Netflix has decided to suspend its services in Russia.
This comes just days after Netflix announced suspension of its future projects and acquisitions in Russia on a temporary basis. The OTT platform was reportedly working on four Russian originals.
“Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia,” The Verge quoted a Netflix spokesperson as saying.
Netflix has 1 million users in Russia, according to Bloomberg.
TikTok earlier suspended video uploads and livestreams in Russia after the government announced a new ‘fake news’ law.
According to this law, anyone who spreads false information about the military and calls for sanctions against Russia will be jailed for 15 years or face hefty fines.
Major film companies like Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures and Sony have delayed release of some films in Russian theatres.
Mega tech brands like Apple, Google and Samsung have suspended sales in Russia.
