Bhubaneswar: A youth allegedly thrashed his mother to death and then set the house on fire before fleeing the Kalinga slum under Badagada Police limits in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Prashanta Jena, has been arrested.
According to sources, there was a heated exchange of words between the two in the afternoon. It took an ugly turn when the youth picked an iron rod and hit his mother. He then set the clothes and furniture in the house on fire.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Prashanta had demanded money from his mother and thrashed her to death in a fit of rage when she declined.
Badagada police have seized the semi-burnt body of the woman, identified as Rashmita Jena, and sent it to Capital Hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, said police.
