Geneva: The World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday that COVID-19 will continue to place a strain on the global healthcare systems.

“This pandemic is nowhere near over and with the incredible growth of Omicron globally, new variants are likely to emerge,” Ghebreyesus was quoted as saying in a press conference by news agency AFP.

According to Ghebreyesus, tracking the virus is essential for health care workers and noted that even mild COVID-19 cases are “inundating” healthcare facilities.

“The virus is circulating far too intensely with many still vulnerable. For many countries, the next few weeks remain really critical for health workers and health systems,” Ghebreyesus further said.

As the new variant, Omicron surges, over 2.8 million daily new COVID-19 cases is the current average, according to the latest Worldometers data.
