Nabarangpur: An elderly man was killed as a pick-up van dragged him for 30 metre on road at Sanabharandi village in Umerkote block of Odisha’s Nabarangpur on Thursday.
According to sources, the victim, identified as Gauri Majhi, was crossing the road when the loaded van hit him. As Majhi’s leg got stuck in the van, he was dragged for about 30 metre.
As the elderly man died in the mishap, agitated locals blocked Umerkote-Jeypore road with his body. They demanded adequate compensation for Majhi’s family.
On being informed, a team from Umerkote police station including its officer-in-charge Dambarudhar Pradhan went to the spot and pacified the agitators by assuring them of looking into their demand.
The police have seized the van and have launched investigation into the incident while the driver of the vehicle is absconding.
