Rayagada/Koraput: Amid outbreak of diarrhoea in several parts of Odisha’s Rayagada and Koraput districts, one patient reportedly died and at least 44 others were affected by the disease.
As per preliminary information, the water-borne disease reportedly claimed the life of one person and left at least four others critical in Rayagada, while around 40 people were affected in Koraput. The patients complained of loose motion, vomiting, nausea and stomach ache.
The deceased has been identified as Gopal Kandamaka, who was initially admitted to Muniguda Community Health Centre (CHC) after he complained of loose motion. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) where he reportedly died while undergoing treatment.
Among the four affected persons in Rayagada, one has been undergoing treatment at Muniguda Government Hospital while three others are being treated at Christian Hospital at Bisamkatak. Their condition was stated to be critical.
In Koraput district, many diarrhoea cases were reported. As many as 40 residents of Sabai village under Semiliguda block in the district are undergoing treatment.
Following sudden rise of diarrhoea cases, the Health Department has sent a medical team to the village to take stock of the situation. The team members are also investigating to ascertain the reasons behind the spread of the disease.
Contaminated water is suspected to be the reason behind the spread of the water-borne disease.
A senior official said that bleaching powder has been sprinkled in the affected areas as part of measures to contain the disease from spreading its tentacles. Besides, the medical team has collected water samples to know the reason behind the diarrhoea outbreak. The situation is under control and steps have been taken to prevent further spread of the disease.
