Bhubaneswar: Balasore police on Sunday detained nine persons while they were allegedly trying to strike a deal for the question papers of Combined Graduate Level (CGL) ahead of the exams conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
The brokers are being kept at Balasore sadar police station.
According to sources, the detained individuals were apprehended by Cyber and Talasari-Udaipur Marine police following a raid on a lodge this morning after some vehicles were intercepted near Baruni Bridge on NH-16 and the occupants interrogated. While six of the accused are from Odisha, the rest three belong to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
They had planned to leak CGL exam question papers to around 40 aspiring candidates at a hotel at Digha and demanded Rs 10 lakh from each of them.
The accused had asked the aspirants to come to Balasore and even collected original documents, mobile phones and blank signed cheques from them. Five four-wheelers cars, one bus, three signed blank cheques, 15 mobile phones and certificates of some applicants were seized from those detained, who were later arrested.
Preliminary reports said that the mastermind behind this question paper racket is believed to be from Bhubaneswar. Police, however, are yet to disclose his identity.
The CGL examination, which is conducted recruit Group B and C officers to various posts in top ministries, departments and organisations of the Government of India, is being held from July 14-27.
