10-Year-Old Vehicles To Be Impounded In Delhi; What To Do If You Have One?

New Delhi: People living in India’s capital city will be fined for using diesel vehicles which are more than 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old. The vehicles will also be impounded and scrapped.

The Delhi Government Transport Department on Wednesday announced that if such vehicles are being used on road, their owners will be fined Rs 10,000.

The number of 15-year-old petrol vehicles is reported to be around 35 lakh and 10-year-old diesel ones around 3 lakh.

The Supreme Court has directed the transport department to prepare a list of delisted vehicles and notify their owners. These vehicles will be scrapped.

Only 2,831 vehicles have been scrapped till May 30, 2021.

During the announcement of the Union Budget for 2021-22, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said there will be a policy that would make renewing fitness certificates expensive for 20-year-old private vehicles. However, the same will not be applied in Delhi because of the pollution situation which the apex court has termed as “very critical”.

This policy has, however, faced backlash on social media where people are complaining about the economic hardships to be faced by scrapping an old car.

How To Scrap Old Vehicles?

There are 5 registered scrappers. You need to call them or register online. After the scrap value is decided, documents will be verified and then the vehicle will be scrapped. A cut piece of the chassis number will be kept by the scrapper as proof, and a certificate issued. The vehicle then needs to be deregistered at the RTO.

Is There A Way To Sell Older Vehicles?

If your vehicle has not crossed the 10-year (diesel) and 15-year (petrol) limit, you can get a NOC from Delhi RTOs and register or sell the vehicle in a different state.
