Sundargarh: In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old girl died after she accidentally consumed rice laced with poison meant for killing rats at a village in Biramitrapur area of Odisha’s Sundargarh district.
The incident reportedly took place at Riung village under the jurisdiction of Biramitrapur police station in the district. The deceased was identified as Kiran, daughter of Sagar Kumbhar of the village. She was a class-V student in a local school.
Sources said, the girl returned home from school on Tuesday afternoon and ate the rice not knowing that it had been mixed with rat poison and kept in the house.
As her condition turned critical shortly after consuming the poison-mixed rice, family members rushed her to the Rourkela Government Hospital (GH), where doctors declared her dead.
Police sent the body for post-mortem and registered a case of unnatural death. The girl’s body was later handed over to her family.
Locals said Sagar’s elder daughter had also died a few months ago after being bitten by a snake while sleeping at home.
