Bargarh: As many as 14 bonded labourers were rescued from Bheunria village under Padmapur tehsil in Bargarh district on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted a pick-up van and rescued the labourers from it. The vehicle has been seized and its driver detained.
The rescued labourers were being trafficked to Barpalli area from Paikmal area in the district for work.
“It seems that the labourers were lured with money and pushed into bondage. Efforts are on to nab those responsible for trafficking the labourers”, a police officer informed.
According to locals, a number of similar cases had been reported in the recent past, in the district and outside, where labourers were to work in dismissal conditions with no access to basic amenities.
