Bhubaneswar: Even as some parts of Odisha were partially relieved from intense heatwave due to thunderstorm activities, as many as 18 places recorded temperature of 40 degree Celsius on Tuesday compared to 31 places on Monday.
According to evening bulletin of the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar, 9 places in the state reeled under 42 degree Celsius on more on the day. Sambalpur was the hottest place in the state with 44.3 degree Celsius which was 6.3 degree more than normal temperature.
It was followed by Hirakud with 43.7, Jharsuguda 43.4, Sundargarh and Deogarh 42.8, Rourkela 42.6, Balangir and Boudh 42.5 and Nuapada with 42 degree Celsius.
Bhubaneswar, which recorded 44.3 degree Celsius, the highest in 11 years, on Monday, heaved a sigh of relief due to overnight rain as mercury plummeted to 34.2 degree Celsius on Tuesday. Cuttack recorded 35.8 degree on the day.
The IMD forecast no large change in maximum temperature (day temperature) during next 5 days at many
places in Odisha. It is likely to be above normal by 4-6 degree Celsius at one or two places.
Issuing an orange warning, the Met office said heatwave to severe heatwave condition is very likely to prevail at one or two places in the district of Jharsuguda and Sambalpur.
Similarly, a yellow warning was issued for Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh where heatwave is very likely to prevail at one or two places.
The IMD also forecast that thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangapur and Rayagada.
