Koraput: An 18-year-old girl went missing after being swept away in Machkund river near Lamtaput in Odisha’s Koraput district on Wednesday.
Sources said the girl, identified as Namita Badanayak, had been to the Khinmung bathing ghat of Machkund river along with her friends to take a bath when the mishap took place.
She accidentally slipped and went deep into the river before being swept away by the strong current. Her friends tried their best to rescue her, but failed to pull her out of the river water.
They rushed to the village and informed the locals about the incident. While a group of locals launched a rescue and search operation to trace the girl, fire services and police were also informed.
On being informed, fire service and police personnel from Lamtaput launched a search operation to trace the missing girl.
