Nabarangpur: As many as 19 bonded labourers were rescued by a joint team of the Labour Department and police in Nabarangpur district.
Acting on specific information, officials of the Labour Department with the help of local police intercepted a private bus at Nabarangpur town and rescued six minor girls, four minor boys, six women and three children from the vehicle.
The victims hailing from Raighar area of the district were being trafficked by a middleman.
The middleman identified as Krushna of Chilika in Puri district was trafficking them to Vishakhapatnam to work at a construction site.
However, Krushna managed to escape during the raid. Efforts are on to nab him. Proper arrangements will be made to send the victims to their native place, a police officer informed.
On May 13, at least 14 bonded labourers were rescued by police from Bheunria village under Padampur tehsil in Bargarh district.
The rescued labourers were being trafficked to Barpalli area from Paikmal area in the district for work.
