19-Day-Old Boy Sold For Rs 10,000 In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested four persons, including parents of an infant boy who was allegedly sold for Rs 10,000.

The child was later rescued from Macheswar and brought to Capital hospital.

According to sources, Dilip Das and his wife Mini Das of Satyanagar slum at Bharatpur under Khandagiri police limits had sold their 19-day-old baby to an unidentified man in December last year.

On getting information, the Childline members of Bhubaneswar lodged a complaint in this regard with Khandagiri Police.

The couple initially denied having sold their fifth baby out of poverty and instead said that they had given him away to ensure a better future for him.

The childless buyer had promised to take care of the baby as his own and provide a job to Dilip at a poultry farm, said Mini.

Among those arrested is an ASHA in whose presence the child was handed over to the buyer, the sources added.
