1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: Ex-Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, Serving A Life Sentence, Convicted In Another Case

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar over the killing of two persons in the national capital during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh were murdered on November 1, 1984 in the Saraswati Vihar area of the national capital on November 1, 1984.

The then Congress leader was accused of leading a huge mob, armed with weapons, which resorted to looting, destruction of Sikh properties to take revenge of former PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination by her guards. As per the complaint of Jaswant’s wife, the angry mob attacked their house, killed her husband and son, looted articles and set it on fire.

Special judge Kaveri Baweja of Rouse Avenue court passed the conviction order and posted the arguments on sentence for Feburary 18.

The 79-year-old Kumar, currently serving a life sentence in another anti-Sikh riots case in Delhi Cantonment, was produced before court from Tihar jail for the pronouncement.

In December 2021, the court found sufficient material to form a “prima facie opinion that Kumar was not only a participant, but had also led the mob,” and framed charges against him.
