New Delhi: Gold weighing 2.4 kg, worth Rs 1.5 crore was found hidden in a lavatory of an IndiGo plane that arrived in Chennai from Abu Dhabi on Monday.
The gold was found when the plane was cleaned by staffers before it was to fly to Hyderabad. The cleaning staff found a parcel hidden inside the flush tank of the toilet. They panicked and alerted the airport officials who sent for a bomb squad to ascertain if the parcel contained any explosives, The Times of India reported.
After ruling out the possibility, the parcel was opened and 32 gold biscuits weighing 2.4 kg in total were found inside.
The gold was handed over to customs officers. They suspect that the gold was destined for Hyderabad. Smugglers might have handed over the gold to a courier in Abu Dhabi who left the consignment in the lavatory for the next courier boarding the flight in Chennai to carry it to Hyderabad, the report added.
