Hyderabad: Two days after quitting as Telangana Governor, Tamilisai Soundararjan on Wednesday rejoined the Baharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai.
As the Opposition, including DMK and Left parties, criticised Soundararajan for joining the BJP after holding the office of Governor, Annamalai said her return to the party reflects her dedication to the BJP’s principles and goals.
The state BJP president claimed that persons holding exalted posts quitting office to start working again for the public as an ordinary person is possible only in the BJP.
“A person belonging to a political party other than the BJP will not quit high offices. For them, being in politics is meant only to assume top positions,” Annamalai said.
“She functioned very well as Governor. Quitting that position and joining politics again shows Soundararajan’s love for the people,” Annamalai said.
“It’s not an easy decision. NDA is going to win more than 400 seats. So Tamilisai wants to be in politics and wants to contribute to the BJP,” Annamalai added.
The resignation of Soundararajan, who is a gynaecologist, has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu.
There is speculation that Soundararajan may contest from the Central Madras constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The 62-year-old Soundararajan joined the BJP over two decades ago.
She resigned from the saffron party before assuming the office of Governor of Telangana in 2019. She was given additional charge of Lt Governor of Puducherry in 2021.
