2 Fresh Systems Over Bay Within 7 Days May Pump Up Rains In Odisha; Check IMD Forecast

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain till August 26 under the influence of a low-pressure area, which lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas of northeast Jharkhand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

“While it is likely to move nearly westwards towards Jharkhand during next 24 hours, a cyclonic circulation also persists over north Bay of Bengal,” according to the midday bulletin.

The weather agency has sounded orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) and thunderstorm with lightning for Sambalpur, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts on August 23. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) along with thunderstorm and lightning may also occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Bargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Balangir and Nuapada.

On August 24, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm with lightning may continue at one or two places in Sambalpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh and Keonjhar districts. Heavy rain along with thunderstorm activity is also likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Nuapada, Bargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur.

The intensity of rain is likely to gradually decrease thereafter.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm with lightning may lash one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Keonjhar on August 25, and Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts on August 26.

Light to moderate rain/thundershower may continue at some places across the state during the subsequent 3 days.

According to the IMD’s extended weather outlook for Odisha, widespread to fairly widespread rain/thundershower with isolated heavy to very heavy falls v is likely in the state between August 23 and August 29. “A fresh cyclonic circulation is likely to form over North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around August 24. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of Northwest Bay of Bengal around August 25. It would move westnorth-westwards across Gangetic West Bengal, North Odisha, and Jharkhand and adjoining Chhattisgarh during the subsequent 3-4 days,” it said.

Between August 30 and September 5, widespread to fairly widespread rain/thundershower may occur in the state. “There could be another cyclonic circulation or low pressure area over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal towards the end of the first week or in the beginning of the second week around August 29 in association with favourable environmental conditions over the Bay of Bengal,” it added.
