Baripada: Two men were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years by a court in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday for raping a 16-year-old girl seven years ago.
Mayurbhanj Special POCSO Court judge Sumita Jena, while convicting the two and awarding the jail term, also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 each on both the convicts.
The court also directed the Mayurbhanj District Legal Services Authority to pay Rs 4 lakh to the girl as compensation, according to special public prosecutor Abhinna Kumar Pattnaik.
As per the prosecution, the incident took place at Badhunia village in the district on February 5, 2016 when the girl was alone at her house. Both the men forcibly took her to a secluded place nearby and committed the crime.
The family members of the girl lodged a complaint at Bisoi police station following which a case was registered against the two under POCSO Act and relevant provisions of the IPC.
The court pronounced the judgment after examining the statement of the girl, other witnesses and the medical report.
