Berhampur: Two persons were arrested by the police in connection with the brutal assault on a young couple on Giri Road in Odisha’s Berhampur.
The arrested accused persons have been identified as Raj Malhotra and Lingaraj Samal.
However, the prime accused, identified as Sandeep Sahu, is still on the run. Police have launched a massive hunt to trace and apprehend him.
Notably, the shocking incident took place on Sunday evening when a group o
f around five persons intercepted 26-year-old Umesh Rath of Goshaninuagaon and his girlfriend while they were riding a bike on Giri Road.
The miscreants allegedly attacked the two with sticks and bamboo. The woman sustained injuries while trying to shield her boyfriend. A video of the assault, showing the young man lying on the road and his girlfriend protecting him, went viral on social media, sparking public outrage.
Police said the assault was the outcome of previous enmity between the accused and the victim. Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M said two persons have been detained for interrogation.
Searches are on to nab the other accused persons named in the FIR. Several teams have been formed by the police and raids are being conducted at several locations.
Preliminary investigation indicates the attack was pre-planned.
