Malkangiri: Two persons were arrested for allegedly duping people in Odisha’s Malkangiri district by posing as police officials and lawyers from Bhubaneswar.
As per information, the accused allegedly duped Chalanguda Sarpanch of over Rs 18,000 by impersonating a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in January, this year.
The two had also cheated two advocates of Rs 10,000 each by posing as High Court lawyers in July, this year.
The victims had lodged complaints at Malkangiri police station after being cheated. Police then launched a probe and nabbed both the accused, identified as Kartik Rautaray and Ekan Pani of Nayagarh district.
During interrogation of the duo, police found that the two used to cheat people after collecting their mobile phone numbers. They used to demand money either by threatening or seeking assistance by posing as a colleague from their own profession.
Further investigation is in progress to ascertain their involvement in other cheating cases in other parts of the state.
