Brahmapur: Two excise officials were injured in an attack by a group of miscreants in Khallikote area of Odisha’s Ganjam district.
According to preliminary information, a group of miscreants allegedly attacked the officials late on Tuesday night and freed two arrested illicit liquor traders near Bharasha village under the jurisdiction of Khallikote police station in the district.
Sources said the excise team had arrested two traders during a raid near Bharasha village. The operation was conducted after they received information that two persons were illegally transporting country liquor.
The excise officials were taking the two to the police station when some miscreants suddenly mounted an attack on the team. The attackers reportedly freed the two arrested liquor traders before fleeing the spot.
Two excise personnel sustained injuries in the attack. They were admitted to a hospital in Khallikote for treatment.
Following the incident, the excise team sought assistance from the local police and a team from Khallikote rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.
Two accused were reportedly taken into custody and taken to the station for questioning. Raids are also being conducted at multiple locations to trace and apprehend the other miscreants involved in the incident.
