Malkangiri: Two minor girls drowned as they fell into a water-filled pit at a village Dhepasahi under Chitrakonda area of Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Thursday.
According to sources, the incident took place when the children were playing near the roadside pit at Dhepasahi. The deceased were identified as Subhadra Kamar (4) and Sumi Janam (3).
The pit, earlier dug by a contractor for water storage during road construction in the area, was filled with water. The girls slipped into the pit while playing near it.
They were rescued by the villagers in a critical condition and rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead, the sources added.
Angry over the mishap, the villagers held the contractor, responsible for the children’s death and sought action against him. They also demanded adequate compensation to the bereaved families.
